Shitodome'
Home

Two sizes of SHITODOME EXIST: The smaller were made to fit the KASHIRA and the larger, the KURIKATA.

Set  #  SD-01 (above) is the most common style and are found on the majority of old swords. Design # 1 is also available in both the smaller and the larger size.

The flared lip, or 'rim', found on many 'larger' Shitodome is seldom found in the smaller size because the edge of the 'rim' would be more exposed and snag everything.  Naturally if the Kashira surface is 'tall', in design ( like our Moon Crane Fuchi Kashira set # 8 ), the rim edge would not be a problem.

Shitodomé are found on most older high quality swords. Because Shitodomé fit into a tight & small hole, installing them must be done carefully to avoid damaging them.

SHITODOME are NOT recommended to be used on most modern made swords because most modern made Sageo are produced by machine and consequently are not as tightly woven as were hand made Sageo and they are unable to fit through the Shitodome.

For a working sword, we strongly recommend Kurikata part # 32 as it was produced with a slightly larger polished edge to the hole and it will provide smooth passage of modern bulky Sageo through the Buffalo Horn Kurikata without snagging or the need for Shitodome.
