Level 2 polish (same blade, before & . . . . . . . . . . .after)
If I were some other polisher and had a competitor (like myself) offering reasonable sword polishing prices, it would make shivers run up my back. Trying to earn a living in today's economy is tough on those who's talent and sole income is from polishing swords and as a result, they must play the 'sock it to em' game and charge two or three times what is a fair market price, like that what is charged by our polisher. The public is finally getting smart and high priced polishers are having a hard time selling their services, which often cost more than their customers sword is worth. As a result, they have nothing good to say about us and our polishing service which is priced at only $800.My happy customers are provided a fantastic sword polish at a very reasonable price because unlike the 'others', we are diversified and do not rely entirely on polishing income. Our happy customers tell us that whenever the issue of our 'pricing' is brought up at Sword Shows or the Forums, they hear that old one-liner: 'You get what you pay for'.. but, only from the mouths of competitive polishers as they attempt to justify the high cost of their efforts...etc, etc'.The bottom line is very simple: Unless you have a high quality family sword or national treasure that Grandpa (or Dad) brought back from Japan, or your sword was issued papers (certificate) at a Shinsa, paying more than what we charge is a waste of your money. Our two sword polishers have been providing their services for some time and at a very 'reasonable' price because we provide them with 'steady work' ( hard to find in today's economy ) and because of this mutually beneficial arrangement with our polishers, we offer our high quality polish (called a 'level two') for only $800. Our 'level two' polish completely removes fingerprints, tiny chips, scratches, rust, helps to crisp up the lines and does a great job bringing out the Hamon. (see the above 'before & after' images of the same blade (mine) that I was fortunate to have photographed prior and after the polish.
A 'Level one' polish is available and it will bring out features such as Kinsugi, Sunagashi and other minor effects that are appreciated primarily by advanced sword collectors and recommended if your sword was made by a highly ranked sword maker and therefore, obviously worth a great deal of money. These effects become visible only after special high quality Japanese finger-stones are applied to the blade. For applying their skills, their time & efforts, you can expect a 'level one' polish to cost between $1500 and $2000. Although our $800 level of service does not provide a museum quality polish, it is the 'level' of polish recommended to owners of working swords and for the average ww-2 blade. Some polishers (not ours) will encourage prospective customers to pay for a level one polish (why not, they make more money) but experience shows that a 'level one' polished sword used for 'practice training' soon become scuffed and damaged, regardless of how careful the user may be. Testing at sword shows has proven that when a sword users examined a 'levels 'one' & 'two' polish together at the same time, all voiced the same opinion that they saw no reason to throw money away for what little difference there was between the two levels.
Note: Old Saya are generally contaminated with tiny specks of rust and dirt which will scratch and cause rusting of a freshly polished blade and it is recommended to not put a freshly polished blade back into its original scabbard (Saya). To solve this problem, newly polished blades should be stored in a custom made Honoki wood Shirasaya (resting case) or, having it mounted up like a Samurai sword in a new lacquered Saya.
