Sword Terminology used for Saya parts.

********************************************************************

Note:       Water Buffalo horn parts

have been used traditionally on Japanese Saya and only the most expensive swords were decorated with metal parts such as those displayed below.  The below parts are 'options' and are not part of any 'package'.  They can easily be added to any newly constructed Saya as per your request.  Individual prices available to written request or phone requests only.

KOJIRI

Pictured below are our high quality KOJIRI.  In keeping with tradition, all Kojiri are made of black colored Steel.

Our Kojiri are replica's of genuine Japanese KOJIRI and as such, provide that familiar 'oval' slender shape (knowing where the cutting edge is without looking) associated with antique Japanese swords.

KOJIRI are more easily fitted during new Saya construction. All measurements are approximate 'outside' dimensions. In addition to providing protection for the blade, metal Kojiri also add a touch of class normally found in Museum quality Koshirae.

K-03 is sized for Tanto or Wakizashi

Kojiri numbers 9 thru 14 will more easily fit larger sized blades.

KURIKATA Metal Kurikata are available to all who choose to upgrade the appearance of their Saya.  While a limited number of the below styles are available in polished black Steel, most are 'antique' Silver and available with Shitodome.

Although most Kurikata are made of Water Buffalo Horn, many high quality swords were fitted with decorative metal Kurikata.

<---------<  We are able to cast Kurikata with Shitodome together as one piece saving you the $80 cost of purchasing Shitodome  separately.

Metal bands for Saya

The above bands can be used to re-enforce a split or otherwise damaged Saya and are not limited to the Koiguchi.  They are made of thin metal, Copper, Silver, Steel and or Bronze.  Bands A & B are for Tanto and Wakizashi and are shaped to accommodate Kozuka / Kogei.  All measurements are 'outside'.    Horn Koiguchi  are also available.

The 'BADGE' We do not know the name for the above item ( referred to as 'The BADGE'.) This part (another exclusive) is found on 'formal' unwrapped Tsuka and a high grade of Samegawa with large nodes was most often used. Found on highly decorated Wakizashi and Tanto that were owned by the merchant class who could afford this style. The purpose of the badge was to cover the hole in the Kashira where Tsukaito would have normally passed through.

Available in bright or black Silver or 24K Gold plated Silver.

Kozuka Hitsu

Again, we offer a Saya part that until now has not been available from any source. This part straddles the front end of the Kozuka slot of a fully fitted and decorated Saya.  Bamboo or the Crashing Wave design is available in antiqued Silver (as above), black colored Silver or 24K Gold plated Silver.

Pole Arm 'ends' (Ishizuki)

A Naginata pole end is the one to the left (oval in shape)

Naginata poles are oval in shape so that the 'user' knows where the cutting edge is... without looking,... whereas spears and most other pole arms were made for stabbing (poking, thrusting) and were equipped with round poles and round pole ends (the two on the right).

Water Buffalo horn  parts are traditional and cost considerably less than metal parts which accounts for its longtime popularity.

Note: Most domestic wood that is used by Saya makers has an approximately 15% moisture (water)  content,  Japanese Honoki wood (imported) is aged and dried and preferred for Japanese swords as it insures that your steel blade will not rust from being in contact with it.

Unless otherwise requested, all Saya are mounted with Water Buffalo horn parts (Koiguchi, Kurikata and KOJIRI) and are finally covered with a 3 coat application of hand rubbed lacquer.

     ________________________________________________________

NOTE:   It is not possible to add metal KOJIRI, Kurikata and Koi-guchi to Saya once the Saya is made and lacquered. Metal parts must be installed at the time of Saya construction when the wood can be shaped to fit the metal parts.  More Information is available in the 'price list'.
